you guys are so sassy

it IS a major divide; people who think office carpeting screwed to the wall is worth looking at and thinking about, and people who call bullshit

its not even about calling bullshit really tho, because everything can be art that is fine, its so boring to say X is art Y is not art, etc

its that there is nothing exciting to see or think about
it can be art, fine, sure, but it is worthless to me intellectually, emotionally, spiritually

it is no coincidence i am illustrating my point with these photos

most good artists i know refresh their brains with old masters and historical works of art
whenever they start accidentally thinking some carpet on the wall is awesome

guest blog!!
stefan bondell went to rome for his 30th bday and sent me some photos

remember New York Minute Rome?
that was such an experience

didnt get to see ANY of this cool stuff when i was there because of how much work there was to do

whee!
i miss rome. i wish i could do another fun show there

a bit more expensive than the fresh drinking water free on the street above!

stefan and arden birthday night
so stefan is the guy you may have heard of from his big poetry readings
he sent me some photos of the last one! that i missed for some stupid reason and its awesome

no its this!
oh wait no that was the first one

dashy was friends with him
he talked about him to me a lot, made him sound like this fascinating guy
which im sure he is

aw
its so nice stefan has these photos
here is fun video of terence being crazer!

im skipping a bit ahead to just show you what the bun did most recently at the Mary Boone

do not go gentle into that good night

you can compare this to the pile of sand with balls that i said was “barely art”

excited to hear what you think
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

The office carpet screwed to the wall is not art, but does it match the drapes?
piles of (insert any item here) are not art. it’s been done to death. i don’t care what bullshit concept is spewed to go with it and make it “art”, it’s just not. giant sunflower seeds? not art. pile of salt? not art. round rocks? yup…you guessed it, not art. it’s driving me nuts how conceded these artists are in showing this and thinking it’s genius and meaningful. “look at me!! look at me!! i piled something!! i’m FABULOUS!!!
case in point…
http://www.stuff.co.nz/waikato-times/news/2836478/Absent-artist-makes-a-pile-at-arts-awards
i think koh has done enough interesting work to be given the benefit of the doubt.
soon as your able to ”build a hype” behind yourself you can stick a feather in dog shit and call it art. everyone that follows whatever will just agree i think the real art is in getting these hypebeats to belive whatever.
i think the pile on its own would be bullshit but as part of a performance, especially a selfless one like this, its legitimized, also the fact that its part of an ongoing unfolding mythology that terence has created is beautiful, so its sort of like looking at a spot of color on a chuck close painting and calling it bullshit without looking at the whole thing
I know Kathy that you like TK and your bias shows – but this one is really kaka. As you say at the beginning of this post, one should not be afraid to say: Oh fuck it, Koh, must try harder.
Where is the ALIFE show?
first of all, you give us a blog post without rosson.
then, in said blog post, you knock robert morris.
that makes me sad.
say what you will. in the end, terence koh is the grand rebuttal to all.
love those stefan bondell paintings. it’s refreshing to see some good art on this blog.
dash snow’s daughter is very cute.
Very nice dash photos.
I want more!!
seems like Terence is doing a semiotics reprise on the traditional Mount Kailash pilgrimage.
Linguisitically it matches:
The word Kailāśā means “crystal” in Sanskrit. Chandra (1902: p. 32) in his dictionary identifies the entry for ‘kai la sha’ (Tibetan: ཀཻ་ལ་ཤ; Wylie: kai la sha) which is a loan word from Sanskrit ‘kailāśa’ (Devanagari: कैलाश).[2]
The Tibetan name for the mountain is Gangs Rin-po-che. Gangs or Kang is the Tibetan word for snow peak analogous to alp or himal; rinpoche is an honorific meaning “precious one” so the combined term can be translated “precious jewel of snows”.
So crystal growth itself sort of has that frisson of Erwin Panofsky
and then there’s the compounding
or the question
how is a pile like a crystal
so perhaps a hinge in agency
i could go on, but i’m sort of all through with that stuff.
I had Art History from Jeff Kelley the long-winded professor who curates and theorizes all the Allan Kaprow stuff.
I’m sympathetic to Terence here because I sort of really dig crystallography and tibet
but i probably would have made a direct reference to Bon
and had the pile vibrated to dissolution from within
revealing a weird
smoking werewolf hybrid insect corpse pupa thing
wearing a Jane Austen halloween mask and tibetan turquise jewelry.
but that’s me.
i didn’t know that the photos from the poetry situation were old news, and then seeing that photo of dash unexpectedly — phew
my bad. crystals not attach to Panofsky, but to
Alois Riegl! yeah. I get those two mixed up sometimes.
Crystal growth might be compared to Riegl’s concept of Kunstwollen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alois_Riegl
Which is sort of like the conservation of matter in one sense
but also like Virus B-23 in another.
conservation of morpholgy
and the extrapolation of morphology
is in constant dialectic with all content within a singularity
where vocabulary
determines
reality
WOW, really? This art vs. not art conversation is tired. We know you love craft. We know you like paint. We know you like low brow illustrations & “street” art. Can we move past the first term art school debate?
